Vak

A stretch of coastal desert where the mountains come down almost to the sea, leaving a narrow shelf of sand and salt scrub between the rock and the water. Landings are possible on two beaches and nowhere else. Heat coming off the stone makes the whole coast shimmer, so ships have run aground on a shoreline they could see perfectly well.
