The Valdrin Codex A record of what we agreed to remember

Blackwater Marsh

For most of the year this is dry basin floor, a bed of dark alkali silt that crunches underfoot. Then the seasonal flood comes down out of the north and the whole depression fills to knee depth with water the colour of tar. It holds for a few weeks, breeds a season of insects and birds, and is gone.
